Dorie Reyes Polo: Weaving Courage, Culture, and Creativity at the Likha’t Latik Intercultural Fashion and Art Show
At the vibrant and inspiring Likha’t Latik Intercultural Fashion and Art Show, one presentation stood out for its emotional depth, cultural elegance, and powerful message of hope—Dorie’s Art Collections, the remarkable body of work by Dorcas Poloczek y Reyes, widely known as Dorie Reyes Polo.
More than an exhibition of paintings, her featured collection became a moving testimony of resilience, womanhood, healing, and artistic rebirth. It was a showcase where color met courage, and where every brushstroke carried the story of a woman who transformed pain into purpose.
Born on December 29, 1955, in Talon, Amadeo, Cavite, Philippines, Dorie is the youngest of fourteen children of Primo Montoya Reyes and Mercedes Villanueva Bautista Reyes. Raised in a large Filipino family grounded in faith, hard work, and perseverance, she developed an early appreciation for life’s simple blessings and the beauty of community.
Her educational journey began at Talon Elementary School, followed by studies at Tagaytay City Institute. Driven by a calling to care for others, she pursued Midwifery at St. Anthony’s School in Batangas, and later Nursing at Philippine Christian University – Dasmariñas.
This commitment to service eventually led her abroad. In West Germany, Dorie became a Registered Nurse, serving as an ICU Nurse at Sana Krankenhaus in Hürth, where she provided dedicated and compassionate care in high-pressure medical environments. Later, she specialized as a Wound Assessor and Palliative & Oncology Care Nurse with Medicare Grevenbroich, helping patients and families navigate some of life’s most difficult moments with dignity and compassion.
After decades of meaningful service in healthcare, Dorie retired in 2019. Yet retirement was not an ending—it became the beginning of a new chapter.
Art Born from Survival
In the same year of her retirement, Dorie faced one of the greatest battles of her life: breast cancer. But where others may have seen darkness, she found light through creativity.
As a breast cancer survivor, she turned to poetry and painting as forms of healing. Her art became more than decoration—it became therapy, testimony, and advocacy.
At the Likha’t Latik show, audiences were drawn to her signature floral works composed of layered circular elements bursting with vivid colors and life. These pieces are deeply symbolic.
According to Dorie, her style can be described in three words:
Resilient • Symbolic • Empowering
The circular forms in her paintings represent the breast and nipple, interpreted through diverse textures, colors, and shapes. Each flower symbolizes a woman’s story—strength, vulnerability, healing, pain, and survival.
Her works speak softly yet powerfully: wounds can bloom, scars can become stories, and suffering can be transformed into beauty.
She explains:
“My artworks are not only visual expressions but testimonies of survival and hope. Each painting carries a message that pain can be transformed into beauty and meaning.”
This message resonated strongly during the event, where guests admired the emotional honesty and radiant optimism embodied in every canvas.
A Literary Voice as Powerful as Her Paintings
Beyond visual art, Dorie is also a celebrated poetess and writer whose works reflect themes of faith, resilience, memory, and life’s profound journeys.
In 2022, she published her first poetry collection, Tala at Tula ni Dorie Reyes Polo, followed by contributions to international anthologies such as Own A Poem and Horizons Creed.
Her literary voice continued to flourish with the release of her second book, Hibla ng mga Tula sa Anit ng Gunita, launched in July 2025.
Through both poetry and painting, she demonstrates that creativity has no age limit and no expiration date. Her late emergence into the arts only strengthens her story: it is never too late to begin again.

Dorie’s achievements have gained admiration across continents. Among her notable recognitions are:
* Tala Champion Award (Paris, 2018)

Dorie has also served as an active cultural leader among overseas Filipinos. She held various roles in ENFID Germany and ENFID Europe, including Treasurer, Auditor, and Board Director, helping strengthen Filipino literary and cultural presence across Europe.
She is likewise a member of PHILNETZ e.V. (Philippinisches Diaspora Netzwerk), where she served as Internal Auditor from 2015 to 2016.
In 2025, she was appointed Adviser of Callé Artista PH and named PENTASI B World Poet Laureate – Philippines, further affirming her influence in the global arts community.
Why She Is a Likha’t Latik Icon
When asked what makes her a Likha’t Latik Icon, Dorie answered with humility and truth:
“Being recognized is not only about artistic skill—it is about authenticity, advocacy, and the courage to share one’s truth through art.”
She added in Filipino:
“Para sa akin, ang pagiging Likha’t Latik Icon ay ang kakayahang gawing inspirasyon ang sariling karanasan—na gamitin ang sining upang magbigay ng lakas, pag-asa, at kamalayan sa iba.”
For her, icon status is not measured by popularity, but by purpose.
Timeless, Not Trendy
Dorie believes timeless art comes from originality.
She compares an artist’s journey to footprints on white sand—unique, unrepeatable, and deeply personal.
“If I simply imitate what others are doing, I lose my originality.”
Her dream is that long after she is gone, people will look at her paintings and instantly recognize the spirit behind them.
“This is Dorie.”
That desire to create work rooted in identity rather than trends is what gives her art enduring power.
Legacy of Light
When asked what legacy she hopes to leave, Dorie answered with one word: Courage.
The courage of a woman who never gave up.
The courage to heal.
The courage to create.
The courage to keep faith even in suffering.
“Ang gusto kong iwanan ay ang mensahe ng katapangan at pananampalataya—na kahit anong pagsubok ang dumating, kaya mong lumaban at mag-iwan ng liwanag para sa iba.”
A Celebration Worth Remembering
At the Likha’t Latik Intercultural Fashion and Art Show, Dorie Reyes Polo did more than present art—she shared a life story painted in color, poetry, and grace.
Her collection reminded audiences that beauty can rise from brokenness, that creativity can bloom at any age, and that women’s stories deserve to be seen, honored, and remembered.
Today, Dorie stands as a luminous symbol of Filipino excellence—a nurse who healed bodies, an artist who heals hearts, and a poet whose words and images continue to inspire across the world.
Through every canvas, every poem, and every act of courage, she proves one truth:
The human spirit, when rooted in faith and love, can never be defeated.
