A Mesmerising Evening of Santoor by Dr. Bipul Kumar Ray at Triveni Kala Sangam
On the evening of July 20th at 6 PM, the prestigious Triveni Kala Sangam in New Delhi resonated with the ethereal sounds of the Santoor, as maestro Dr. Bipul Kumar Ray presented a captivating recital organised by Vaanishri, a Delhi-based cultural organisation. A senior disciple of Padma Shri Pt. Bhajan Sopori, Dr. Ray continues to uphold the rich legacy of the Sufiyana Gharana with depth, elegance, and devotion.
The evening unfolded with Raga Bhoop, starting with a serene alap, gradually progressing into a meditative jor and vibrant jhala. Dr. Ray's mastery over the raga, his command on melodic phrasing, and aesthetic purity revealed a rare blend of tradition and creativity. The performance then transitioned into a bilambit composition set to Jhaptaal, followed by a madhyalay in Teentaal, culminating in a drut Teentaal composition that showcased his dexterity and rhythmic precision. The recital concluded with a delightful Dhun in Rag Bhairavi, leaving the audience enchanted.
Adding brilliance to the performance was the dynamic tabla accompaniment by Pt. Hindole Majumdar, whose rhythmic intricacies and intuitive support enhanced the emotive power of the Santoor.
Dr. Bipul Kumar Ray, an internationally acclaimed artist, has performed in over 12 countries and on India’s most prestigious classical stages. His discography includes albums like Strings and Strokes, Odyssey of Santoor, and singles such as The Sky and Starlight of Santoor.
