Santoor Virtuoso Dr. Bipul Kumar Ray Enthralls at Triveni Kala Sangam
New Delhi: An evening of sublime musical expression unfolded at the esteemed Triveni Kala Sangam, where the eminent Santoor exponent Dr. Bipul Kumar Ray mesmerised a full house with his artistry. The concert, presented by Sangeet Sandhya, a reputed cultural organisation from Delhi-NCR, was a memorable homage to the richness of Indian classical music.
Dr. Ray, a distinguished disciple of Padma Shri Pt. Bhajan Sopori and a custodian of the Sufiyana Gharana, took the audience on a soul-stirring journey through melody and rhythm. He commenced with Raga Kaushik Dhwani, presenting an introspective alap that delicately unfolded into a meditative jor and a sparkling jhala. The raga's nuanced textures were explored with remarkable finesse and meditative calm.
What followed was a progression of carefully structured compositions that reflected Dr. Ray’s command over both raga and tala. A slow-paced piece in Jhaptaal set the contemplative tone, followed by a mid-tempo Teentaal that introduced lyrical interplay. The finale—a fast-paced drut Teentaal—revealed technical brilliance and dynamic energy. The recital concluded with a Dhun in Mishra Kafi, a lighter piece that delighted the audience and showcased the Santoor’s lyrical beauty.
Accompanying him on tabla was the masterful Pt. Durjay Bhaumik, whose sensitive yet powerful playing created a rhythmic dialogue that enhanced the overall performance.
With an illustrious career that spans prestigious venues across over 12 countries, Dr. Ray is not only a performer of global acclaim but also a dedicated educator. He has several acclaimed releases to his name, including Strings and Strokes, Odyssey of Santoor, The Sky, and Starlight of Santoor. As the founder of the Raganjali Academy of Performing Arts, he actively promotes the classical arts among the next generation.
The concert ended with a standing ovation, reaffirming Dr. Ray’s stature as one of India's leading Santoor maestros.
